HOLE SHOT WINS 55+ 2010 CRIT CHAMP FOR BIRDITT AT THE PARAMOUNT GP

By John McKee

Good size field of 37 considering there were only 5 60+ racers in the group for their second race in 55+ at the Paramount GP. The Paramount race in 2010 was the host of the SCNCA Masters Criterium Championship. A lot of very good riders  neutralized each other throughout the race. Mitch Weinstock won the $400 tooth whitening prime donated by Bill Langstaff.
Everyone was together on the last lap. Mike Birditt was on Rory O'Rielly coming up the rise between turn 3 and 4. Kal and Dale were taking it wide around the bunch. Rory started to swing wide himself leaving a hole shot wide open for Mike. It was a long sprint by himself but he hit as hard as he could right from the start. He gained a hugh gap. Dale, Kal and the rest of the field started to close but Mike had  good speed going and held on nicely for the win. Kal was 2nd and Dale was 3rd. When Kenny BZ releases his photos I will insert some in my story. Ken said it was ok. The top 12 finishers were:

1-Birditt
2-Szkalak
3-Luedtke
4-Schooler
5-Ricky Shorts
6-Gugulielmelli
7-Cahill
8-Collins
9-Denegal
10-Rubcic
11-Wicks

HYLTON "THE DRAGON" MURPHY BREATHES FIRE AGAIN AT 60+ RACERS AT 2010 PARAMOUNT GP

By John McKee

It was May 9th, 2010 and the Paramount GP which in 2010 was the Masters SCNCA Championship was scheduled. It was Mother's Day. I want to thanks all the mothers, wives that let their husbands and or sons come out and play on the mother's important day of celebration. I only heard about 100 times that it was Mother's Day. I know. I know. Last November I didn't know when Paramount plopped down on a date in May. A race date in May on a Sunday is like gold with all the promoters around and traditional dates taken. May is after the rainy season. In the heart of the race season. Probably not going to be hot or cold. I think I would have rather gone up against the Tour of California. None the less the turnout overall for the event was good at 561 entries and 337 different racers and especially in the morning. The 35+ and Men Pro/1/2/3 were in total about 60 short of what we usually get but the other fields were pretty standard. We had fewer 60+ racers at 28 then last year but I still considered this pretty good. I had hoped for a min of 30.
2010 marked the return of Hylton Murphy from some serious health issues. Hylton placed a very good 4th at SLR in a strong field on May 2nd. The Paramount GP was the 2nd criterium for Hylton this year. To digress a little bit. I met Hylton in 2001 at the Camp Pendleton RR. Hylton use to just go out and burn it up right from the gun and turn everyone's legs on fire from the pain. Hylton's recollection of myself was of a rather quiet and shy person. Now look at me. A real blabermouth. Kind of like Jackie Gleason in "The Honeymooners". My favorite sitcom of all time. Of course that is only in writing. Hylton came to the Paramount race to help his teammate and good friend John Rubcic but why don't I let Hylton put it in his own words as to what happened during the race.

An Unlikely Crit Winner
Early Sunday morning I drove up from San Diego and while driving had the usual feelings of apprehension about going racing. What if I rode poorly? Couldn’t hang? I got there and got to see a lot of my friends before the race. That is always a good thing and one of the biggest reasons to go racing.
Before the race my good friend and team mate John Rubcic (Rocket Boy) said that Kenny is not here today since he had to take his mom to church and that we could get away and he would help me win. I told him the reason I was doing the crit was to work for him. But he would have none of that. Then, as we lined up, a very pretty and slightly glowing (girls glow, boys sweat) young lady came up behind me, gave me a hug and wished me luck. It was quite inspirational. It was Ms Debbie Durand and she had just finished her race and was riding off the course.
My other team mate in the race, Joltin’ Johnny Edwards, gave me a pre-race Bob Barney like lecture about not going on the first lap like I have been wont to do a number of times in the past. He told me to wait at least until after the first prime if I could. I told him that I would try to refrain if I could, but no promises. Somebody stop me, I usually cannot help myself. I don't have a sprinter's muscle fiber in my body and I have to go early (real early) to have a chance.
The official blew the whistle and we were off, a pretty big group of 60+ guys. Most of the stronger guys were there but no Kenny Fuller. He is a World champion, a factor in any race he enters and his presence would have changed things somewhat but not for me really because I have one way to go in a crit, whether Kenny is there or not. Phil Richards went to front and starting riding pretty hard and someone said don't let him go. Phil stayed on the front around the four corner course that had good pavement and a rise along the finishing stretch side. As he turned corner one for the second time he ramped it up. I had been moving up and was about 4 back and I decided to go hard. I got a gap and settled in. I was trying to get out of sight because that usually quiets the chase somewhat. But even though John and John were blocking as best they could, the group would lag back and then surge when somebody would decide to chase hard. I had other friends in the pack who I believed would not chase me, some pretty strong guys. But I could not get out of sight today.
At one point John R and Bruce Steele made it up to me, Bruce took a pull and then they dropped back. I thought something funny was going on because both of those guys are really strong and savvy riders. Then I looked back with about 20 minutes to go and the group was getting really close. Joltin Johnny said he saw me look back and he willed me not to quit. I thought for a second that maybe I should sit up because I was really hurting but I decided to dig harder instead. I think it was Joltin’s telepathy. Bruce Steele came across then and the gap reopened, and Bruce did a lot of work. He told me he and Rubcic had decided I was going to win and Bruce said he would help get me there. In the last 5 laps he was stronger than I was and he would have been the winner if he had wanted to be. But he was a man of his word, pulled most of the last lap and waved me through for the finish. Thanks Bruce, I am deeply indebted to you and will repay you when I get the chace to. Bruce won last years crit state championship when he got in a break with Kenny and John R and those guys started giving each other the stink eye in the last lap and doing the you-go-first-slow-down dance.
Joltin’ Johnny told me that there were some pissed off people in the peloton because when someone would make a big chase effort no one would pull through.  Doug Knox, a very good and really experienced  rider, told me after the race he was not very happy because a lot of people were just afraid to put their noses in the wind. But that is racing and I know I had a lot of help in the race.
So thanks to my buds and thanks life, for another crazy day. It was quite a thrill for me to say the least.
An unlikely state crit champ,
Hylton

I think that about says it all for the most part. I will say this once Hylton was off the front that John Rubcic gave everyone a clinic in how to disrupt a chase fairly and safely. The last lap of the field was rather uneventful and won by John Rubcic and followed in by everyone else. Thanks to all that came out and helped make the 2010 Paramount GP SCNCA Masters Championship a great event. Thanks also to Eric Smith and his official team and Ralph Elliott the number one bike racing announcer around. I think everyone was pleased with the winner of the 2010 SCNCA Criterium Championship. Hylton's goal of getting on the JohnnyMcKee.blogspot.com came true in a big way. Congratulations! Vid below. The top 12 racers were:

1 Murphy
2 Steele
3 Rubcic
4 Diedmont
5 Schneider
6 Magnanti
7 McKee
8 Barnes
9 Richards

BARRIO LOGAN GRAND PRIX 2010

By John McKee

The Barrio Logan Grand Prix was scheduled for May 1st, 2010 and the 55/60+ riders were to start at 8:05 am. $300 payout for both 55s and 60s. Thank you San Diego Bicycle Club. I know Ralph Elliott(the announcer) plays a big part in producing what is always a great event. Current SDBC president Steve Borer put in a 15 hour day. Most riders don't know what hard work and and what it takes to put on a superior event. This is always a superior event. The course itself does have a reputation as being a little dicey but once you get in the flow of the race it isn't a problem. The bumps in the roads are a problem but those aren't going to be fixed any time soon.
There was a good turnout of 55s with about 25 racers and half that in 60+. The results showed 14 55s and 7 60s. When Eric Smith isn't there the placings don't go as deep. There were 10 UC Cyclery/JW Flooring racers and 8 of them were 55+. They were loaded for bear and ready to race. The goal was first in both 55 and 60.
Would they be able to pull it off? There were a number of good riders to challenge in 55+ and Kenny Fuller was there to challenge John Rubcic of UCC in 60+. Kenny was there in his National Championship jersey. He won the criterium in very impressive style last August in Kentucky. I know because I was there and observed the race from within.
The race was was off and Carlos Cruz went to the front looking around waiting for someone to come to his aid. It didn't take long because you knew UCC was going to try and make the race hard and it was hard for much of the race. Riders were aggressive but nothing seemed to stick. Alex Collins, Rick Swanson, Steve Cahill and a host of UCC riders were working it looking for that right combo to make a break work. The riding was smooth without incident through much of the race.
The only break attempt that looked like it might work happened with about 15 mins to go. Mark Helvie of UCC and Steve Cahill of Swami's made a go of it. At first they were after a prime but kept it up and gained a small but decent gap. Kenny Fuller of Simple Green decided to come across the gap and took John Rubcic of UCC with him. JR had been marking Kenny for most of the race.
The 4 of them were together but the chemistry wasn't right. Mark didn't want to go up against Steve in the sprint like Paul Rodiguez did at Dana Point. Kenny seemed to also decide to not give his all to this break effort. 3 of the guys came back but Steve choose to tough it out per what he told me. I didn't see him. With 4 laps to go Kenny gave a very hard pull at the front trying to break things up and it did string things out. Once his effort was done things settled down. 2 laps to go and the pace settled in. UCC was setting up. Mark Helvie came to the front to pull. Dale and Kal were up front. Rick Swanson was also up front as was Mitch Weinstock. Going up the one uphill section between turn 6 and 7 things turned bad. Mitch and Kenny tangled over Kal's wheel and Mitch came away to his left. Paul Rodiguez was to the left of the pack and slightly behind this incident. I was behind Paul and slightly to his right. Mitch came across Paul's wheel and it took Paul completely by surprise. No one was outside Paul and to his left but he wasn't able to react and the contact with his front wheel took him down and he fell to his right with his body. This was right in front of me. My bike hit him in the back and absolutely stopped the bike. I went over the top out of control of course. Somersault like James Belushi in the "Man with the One Red Shoe". He flew further than I did. Probably about 12 to 15 feet once he hit a picnic table and landed in the Potomac River. I landed on the asphalt on my back and shoulder. No one else went down. Mike Birditt was able to ride by on the right of us. The crash did break up the group as the guys further back went by with caution.
The last lap was lead by Mark Helvie with Dale, Kal, Kenny, JR and Mike following in that order. Coming up the hill on the last lap between turn 6 and 7(total of 8 turns), 9 or ten riders were pretty much balled up. By now Dale had taken over the lead but going up the hill Kal thought the pace was too slow and took over. Dale got on his wheel with Kenny picking the lead wheel which ever it was. JR was out of the saddle tight in the group winding up his sprint. Going into the last corner Dale had taken back over the lead with Kenny on his wheel. After the corner JR and Mike Birditt came inside and decided to come in closer to the officials shack. The picture pretty much says it all of the finish. Dale held on for the win in 55+. In 60+ Kenny came off Dale's wheel and trying to hold John Rubcic off and thought before the final results that maybe he did but the photo showed that JR got the best of him by not very much. Kal hung on for 2nd in 55+ with Mike Birditt taking 3rd and filling out the podium for 55+. Mitch Weinstock was right there for 4th in 55+. A smaller group came in a few meters behind and included Alex Collins, Mark Planellas, Steve Cahill, and Rick Swanson all 55+ but also included Carlos Cruz who placed 3rd and filled out the podium for 60+.
Richard Rodiguez had a good ride and placed 4th in 60+. John Edwards came in a little back for 5th in 60+. The officials only showed 14 55+ finishers and 7 60+ finishers but there were a lot more guys that didn't get placed. There were some guys off the back. The crash was the downside of the race and the dark side of our sport. Neither Paul or myself were injured badly. I didn't mention that Mike Mueller of UCC had a flat about half way through the race. His tire came off the rim but everyone was able to avoid him. Other than those issues it was a good race and a double victory for UCC. Results below. That's all for now folks! Train hard and race safe!

Mark Reynolds San Luis Rey Road Race

By George Chester

Mark Reynolds San Luis Rey, sitting on the start chatting with Hylton, Johnny Rocket and Bruce I glance back and think the class behind us must have crowded right in to our group, 19 60+ and 30 55+ racers.  Impressive turnout for our usually lightly attended road races.  Even more impressive would be how many of this group would be there in large bunches at the end of 44 miles, 2000’ of climbing in under 2 hours for an average speed of 23-24 mph.  We rolled out of the parking lot and drilled it down the fast and potentially dangerous descent being led by a large contingent from UC Cyclery.  Everyone is careful, as the screech and smell of burning pads on carbon wheels and the sight of “slice and dice” Armco waiting to catch the unfortunate sobers the field into a fast but safe descent.  UC drives us across the flat rollers at a consistent high pace, often lining out our group around the cone and back up the first climb at between a 14-15mph for a 1st lap avg. speed of 24.5mph.  Somehow the entire group stays largely intact throughout this opening salvo, with most of us towards the back able to come back, on descent number 2.  Once more down the descent safely with gaps being closed and arriving for another quick, at times single file trip across the rolling flat section of the course.  I am sitting at the back entertaining frequent visitors from UC as they drop back to rest after taking their turn driving the pace up front.  A small group has slipped off the front, but I, like many, expect it will come to nothing with the strength of UC at the front and besides the Stars and Stripes; Mr. Fuller, is still with us.  Dale rolls to the back next to me after a lot of hard work up front and we exchange a few words in which he tells me that UC is “not” in the break and they are not making much progress in bringing it back so we can expect a nice brisk pace the second time up the climb.  Impressive, hats off to the guys in that break, Warren Wicks, Gary Shuey, Kim Bleth, Steve Cahill and Jean Viniot, (apologizes if I don’t have the early mix quite right).  Another quick run along the rolling valley, I suspect there is some beautiful scenery along the way, but I have yet to fully enjoy and take it all in and then we launch into the climb easily equaling and at the front increasing the previous accents pace.  This time the group is exploding and big gaps are opening all over the climb.  During this accent, Kenny Fuller and Michael Mueller from UC, make their move off the front and bridge up to the break leaving behind a main group of around a dozen with Bruce and Hylton followed closely by a second chase group of about 6 which I am in along with Johnny Rocket.  Johnny takes charge and gets us going driving the pace down the descent where we consolidate with the main group just before turning onto the valley floor.  Lap 2, 23 mph avg.  Now with the UC designate in the break, we take a break.  UC controls the front at what now seems like a leisurely pace following the fireworks of the previous 1hr 15min.  As we near the turnaround we see the break going the other way and know that it is Game and Set, with the final climb to determine the Match.  As we near the turn into the final climb to the finish the pace ramps back up until once on,  gaps begin to open everywhere and it becomes every man for himself.  When I looked at my download, one of the surprises was that we were climbing all the climbs at pretty much the same “Infernal” pace.  Dictionary translation of “Infernal” includes such words as “Hellish, Diabolical and Damnable”, seems accurate.  Sorry I don’t have the details of how it played out in the break, but I believe as with the following group of 18-20 even though gaps opened the players were all within sight of each other down to the final drive to the finish.  To me an amazing display of the depth of talent that we now have in the Masters 55 and 60 plus riders.  To start with 50 riders aged 55 to 83, (That’s not a mis-print, hats off to the Grand Master, Link Linquist for riding out this tough course), and still have a break and front chase group numbering 25 or so, is a testament to the quality of our masters field.  For me personally, it was great to ride in with a great guy, Johnny Rocket, (having a off day after winning Barrio and destroying his legs the previous week doing an impromptu hike a bike downhill for miles, but that’s a whole ‘nother story) and behind a great friend to both of us, Hylton Murphy, once more showing me his backside.  I’m surprised sometimes that I recognize Hylton from the front, as I very rarely get that view. J  Results below, but a brief summary of the podiums:

Fifty Five Plus: Warren Wicks, 1st  Michael Mueller-2nd, Gary Shuey-3rd.

Sixty Plus:  Kenny Fuller-1st, (How’d he pull that off????? J), Jean Villiot-2nd, (in the break, great ride) and Bruce Steele-3rd, (Ole Steele Buns was kicking himself for missing the break, but watching him ride the front on the climbs was impressive).

Good course, made great by the competition, “Thanks for the Memories”.
