ONTARIO # 4 REPEATS #1

By John McKee

It's July 18th, 2010 and it's time for another go at the Ontario GP course. I could do it in my sleep as I am sure most of you could as well. There was a good turnout of 44 riders with only 15 of them 60+. At one point in the season the 60s were matching the 55s but obviously not now. There were a face or two that I hadn't seen all year and there were some missing faces as well. Mostly in 60+. John Rubcic was there but as a motor ref. Loren Stephens was also there but as a spectator after his successful heart surgery.  Loren is definitely on the recovery trail. Great news there. The weather had been very hot coming into this Sunday but fortunately our race was to start at 7:35 am and last 40 minutes.
The field was off near the start time and Kal Szkalak took off like Arnold S.  in "The Running Man" being shot off into the "game zone" by Richard Dawson. Kal was going good but Alex "The Enforcer" Collins was there and he was having none of this. Alex went to the front and pulled Kal back before the first lap was finished. Without Alex there this could have been a very different race. The second move which was the most dangerous of the day was also intiated by Kal. Mark Planellas was right on his wheel. I hesitated and decided to not react which certainly was a mistake for me in many ways. Kal and Mark got going and created a small gap which started to grow. Mike Birditt was riding very near the front and as people peeled off, he was on the front. Mike at first didn't want to chase. Rino B. went up front and took a couple of pulls but Kal and Mark were still pulling away. It took "The Enforcer" to come to the front and start pulling and pulling hard. Alex would take a break and Mike would lend a hand but not with the same power. Rick Swanson and Steve Cahill also gave a shot at pulling the pack up toward the breakers. It took 3 or 4 laps but Kal and Mark were back into the fold mainly the result of work done by Alex Collins. The field could have used the assistance of Steve Bernade, Vito Czulak, Al & Ricky Shorts but they weren't there.
I think a break of 3 or so riders could have worked that included Kal or Dale and Kal tried a few more times as did Dale but both were closely marked and  the pack reacted quickly in those cases. It didn't seem long before we got the 5 to go sign. The pace had been moderate through most of the race and would vary widely in the last 5 laps with unfortunately the slowest pace of the day was on the last lap. Within the last 5 laps Steve Borer and Reed Moore had a go at a break. This is a dangerous time for a break because riders don't want to chase and tire themselves out. After a couple of laps the breakers were back and the pace really slowed down. No one went straight over the top. The pack almost did a total mix. An indication that things weren't going nicely for the favorites. The one lap to go sign came up and it wasn't really bunchie and getting worse. The peleton was getting extremely twitchy(Please excuse some of the Paul Sherwin talk I threw in. There are some words and phrases he loves and uses over and over). Steve Horine went to the front and set some pace for a while but once he was done there was no one left. Too many teams with a few riders and no one to spare for leadout duties. There maybe downsides to having dominant teams in a race but here is where you would like to see it.
I was following Monty Pettus as was our team plan with Mike Duck to mark Bruce Steele. Monty was getting buried after the last right turn which was turn 4 out of 7 and I was really worried. We had been on the right side which was the side I figured the winning move was going to come from but got funneled onto the other side when approaching turn 6. Mike Birditt got out into the wind on the right side and moved up. He saw Alex Collins hit the gas and Mike went with him. Mike started his sprint a little early and Dale and Kal came flying toward the finish line with Dale taking 1st and Kal just getting by Mike for 2nd. Mike was 3rd and Steve Cahill riding like a light tower on his top bars came across for 4th in 55+. Alex hung on for 5th and Mark Planellas was 6th. The 7th person across the line which was Carlos Cruz was the first 60+ finisher and he knew it raising his hand as he came across the line. Carlos had an albatross around his neck the last 6 or so races and that was me but he definitely buried me on Sunday as did most of the riders. Monty used his finishing speed(38.3 mph) to pass a lot of guys and nipped Mike Fleming for 2nd in 60+ with Mike taking 3rd and Joe Wells doing his first race of the year getting 4th. Joe has been ill since last Nov. and didn't expect much at Ontario but did very well but he does look a few pounds heavier. Glad to see Joe back. Joe was on one of his custom made Tsunami Bicycles. Joe is a master craftsman with aluminum.
Some how this wasn't as fun or as challenging as many of the races this year and didn't have the action, pace and fast final laps that we have seen this year. The race also saw some hip checks of which I received a couple and since no one went down I guess you have to say no harm no foul. Full results below. That's all for now folks! Train hard and race safe!

LUEDTKE/PETTUS WIN @ CBR #7

By John McKee

It's July 11, 2010 and CBR's 7th of 9 criteriums is scheduled for where? Domiguez Hills of course. The course was to be run clockwise which is the more standard direction. The course is slightly easier in this direction. 36 55/60+ racers showed up with 22 of them being 55 and 14 60+. 34 of the 36 got into the official results. The morning was typically overcast and cool with the temp running in the mid 60s. The weather has been running cool since June and we even got some rain on Tuesday morning during the OC early morning Coffee Crew ride(July 6th).
The 55/60+ race was scheduled to go off at 7:45 am and all 36 riders were off on time. Kal usually starts things off but not this race. Michael Edwards decided to not just lead us around but go off the front. After one lap Michael was back with us and the direction of the race was yet to be told. Kal and Dale decided to hold back early on and let teammate Steve Horine chase anything that looked dangerous. There were many attempts at breaks but none of them seemed to have the pop or commitment. Michael Birditt spent the most time off the front. Michael was there to do some speed work and pick up what primes were available. Michael won 2 bottles of wine, a CBR free entry and a package of Kool N Fit. Michael  gave one bottle of wine to Al Shorts because Al led him to the promised land on that prime.
There were many riders off the front but to name a few: Ken Burns, Mark Planellas, Kirk Freeman, Dale Luedtke, Kal Szkalak, Rick Stahlberg, Howard Miller, and several others. None of the efforts got too far away as the pack kept close tabs on the efforts plus like I said earlier none of the breaks seem to have the right mix to make a go of it. Kal is very picky as to who he will roll with and will not roll with Michael Birditt and carry him to the finish line and take the chance of getting out sprinted. Many racers chased and I put in 2 chases when things looked a little too dangerous and there were 5 or more riders off the front. The first time I chased Chris Lotts called me "conpression sock guy" as I went by the start/finish line. I have been wearing compression socks lately. I brought everybody with me.
Kal decided he was going to try and solo it in with 2 and 1/2 laps to go. There was a cadre of guys that chased and had a gap on the main field. Not sure if they actually met up with Kal. With 1 and 1/2 laps to go I chased this group and brought the peleton back and I thought everyone was all together but Kal was still away. The one lap to go came up to my surprise(I thought we would have 2 laps to go) and I was still a little winded but after turn one and after the downhill I felt fine. At turn 2 I came upon a rider that was breaking and going backward and I had to wait until around the corner and make up ground as at least 6 to 8 riders came by me. The pace wasn't too stiff between turn 2 and 3. Kal was still slightly ahead of everyone. This put UCC in a great position. Dale sat on the rider or riders chasing Kal getting an armchair ride to the sprint zone. Either Kal was going to solo it in or Dale was going to have a great chance of sprinting off the chase/leadout. Ricky Shorts started somewhere around turn 3 leading it out with Dale on his wheel and Don Denegal following. At around turn 4 the chasers had caught Kal but Kal wasn't going to quit. Ricky was leading coming around turn 4 as you can see in the picture. There is a small gap to the rest of the field. Dale came off Ricky and Don Denegal tried to come around Dale at the end but didn't have enough speed and power to do it. Dale Luedtke was the winner of the 55+ race and the overall win. Don and Ricky followed in for 2nd and 3rd and Kal hung in there for 4th. The 5th overall rider and 1st 60+ rider was Monty Pettus. Mark Planellas, Wayne Rosenkrante, myself(2nd 60+), Howard Miller, and Carlos Cruz(3rd 60+) followed in with the pack right there. The race saw a lot of action and there were no crashes or close calls to speak of. Some of the placings are below. That's all for now folks! Train hard and race safe!
